MEA CULPA! "OTHER" MEANS ONCE!
Those of you who pay attention to the new weekly poll feature on my sidebar (just one of the keen new items made available by the wonderful revamping of my blog template courtesy of the firm of Lindbergs, Lapper and Gelderblom) may have noticed a particularly glaring omission on this week’s question. Reader Ted Haycraft certainly did, and he sent along a much-appreciated e-mail this morning to point out that under my question “The Best Recent Movie to Deal with Music or the Musical Form?” I managed to leave out the most obvious candidate, the freshly Oscar-picked Once. Ted informed me that he voted for it anonymously on the “OTHER” tab, which made me realize the probable reason why “OTHER” is currently running at 22% of the vote. Ach! Well, once voting has begun Blogger won’t allow even the Lord God Administrator of the Blog to edit the contents, thus preserving the integrity of the polling, I suppose. (One hopes that, Bill O’Reilly’s objections notwithstanding, the primaries and presidential elections are once again held to such stringent standards!)
So just think of casting a vote for “OTHER” as casting a vote for Once until polling ends at 12:01 on Sunday morning. (If you intend “OTHER” to mean yet another movie I’ve forgotten about, just drop a comment under this post.) Sincere thanks to you, Ted, for making clear what should have been obvious from the start—this is what happens, Larry, when I compose poll questions at 4:00 a.m. after a 20-hour day. And who knows what grim fate you may have helped me avoid, Ted? If Glen Hansard is as righteously upset over the box art of the Once DVD as he is, God knows what would happen if he found out about this!
UPDATE: March 8, 12:14 a.m.: The winner of this week's poll? I'm Not There tied with "Other" (which obviously means even MORE than Once thank you very much), both taking 23% of the vote!

ReplyDeleteYou mean like "Sweeney Todd"?
Aaaaagggh! Yes!
ReplyDeleteMy brain hurts! My brain hurts!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I had to be the one to point it out, Dennis. Right now, I picture you looking EXACTLY like that picture your daughter drew.
ReplyDeleteBut only until I got this last comment!
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm just stuffing the box for "Across The Universe."
ReplyDeleteDoes a home movie of my cat walking across a piano count? Because if so...
ReplyDeleteMusic or the Musical Form? Wouldn't that also include "Hairspray" or "Sweeney Todd" or "Enchanted" or "Romance and Cigarettes" or "La Vie En Rose," or "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" or Alvin and the Chipmunks?"
ReplyDeleteYou people want me to harm myself, don't you?
ReplyDeleteMan, I am trying so hard to find more musicals from last year...
ReplyDeleteIf you decide to harm yourself Dennis, just make sure you cue it to some good music! :)
ReplyDeleteKeep it in the context of our discussion!
It should be done like "Miami Vice"
Since I read no objections I will now assume "other" means "Jonathan's home movie of cat walking across piano."
ReplyDeleteYes! My cat now has 26% of the vote so far. Thanks everyone!
I know I voted for it.
ReplyDeleteThe best 'musical' film I saw last year was "Heima" - a documentary/concert film about the Icelandic band Sigur Ros. It follows them around small and large shows in their homeland and treats the viewer not only to their ethereal music, but to the tremendous beauty of Iceland.
ReplyDeleteOf course, it's no ivory tinkling feline...But then, what is?

ReplyDeleteTrue.
