For my first scene to direct, I chose one from THE SWIMMER...one of my favorite films then and now. I recall Stuart saying he was an admirer of the film, but I had no idea it was one of his favorites. What a kick to see him choose it for his New Bev retro.Ned Merrillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15436251586131278302noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-13219843220499302872010-01-13T23:38:54.771-08:002010-01-13T23:38:54.771-08:00Great interview! love Stuart Gordon and I'm de...Great interview! love Stuart Gordon and I'm definitely going to the New Bev for True Grit and A.I.Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04766608534052479340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-42129505764760530532010-01-12T20:26:24.177-08:002010-01-12T20:26:24.177-08:00Edmond. My best friend and his wife and I went to see it here in Westwood. None of us really had an idea how far the movie would go, least of all her, and I think she still thinks of that movie as demarcating the point past which she's never been able to go since in terms of movie gore. And damned if the movie, long since surpassed in terms of what can and has been shown in horror films of every stripe, still packs a punch. The infamous detached head giving head sequence ranks as one of the greatest visual puns ever put on screen! Nobody's topped that one yet, and I suspect no one will!Dennis Cozzaliohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954848938471883431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-52714437744413376572010-01-12T14:32:18.007-08:002010-01-12T14:32:18.007-08:00Great interview, Dennis! Seeing Re-Animator on the big screen when it was first released still rates as one of the scariest over-the-top and crazy (as well as funny!) movie watching experiences I've ever had. I love that film! I'd like to see the Jeffrey Combs' Poe show as well but I don't know if/when it's coming to the Bay Area.

I hope you'll give Irreversible a try. It's not easy viewing but it's also one of my favorite films of the past decade.Kimberly Lindbergshttp://www.cinebeats.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-73392728065029422682010-01-12T09:17:06.318-08:002010-01-12T09:17:06.318-08:00EFC: I think I've finally talked myself into s...EFC: I think I've finally talked myself into seeing Irreversible, though after seeing Antichrist at the New Beverly last week I may soon have to call a brief moratorium on European arthouse cinema that showcases deeply horrific things happening to young, talented actors. I just hope Noe's movie is half as good as Von Trier's.

Kevin: I have a ton of old calendars from m hometown theaters, the Alger and the Circle JM Drive-in in Lakeview, Oregon, culled from the '50s through the '70s, and there must be a ton of double features like this in there to pick out. My parents once brought us to the drive-in when I was around eight years old to see a Dick Van Dyke comedy called Fitzwilly. They let us stay for the second feature, a gritty urban drama about young toughs on a subway train called The Incident (featuring very young versions of Martin Sheen and Beau Bridges, among others). It's very tame, especially by today's standards, but as soon as the "damns" and "hells" started flying in the first couple of minutes, followed by a punk pulling a switchblade out, those speakers got replaced onto the poles very quickly and we were outta there. I think we may have stumbled on a great question for the next quiz too! As tempted as I am to pose it now, I'm gonna file it until the spring. (Which reminds me, I gotta get my answers to the last quiz finished up!)Dennis Cozzaliohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954848938471883431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-87499208968918428792010-01-12T07:53:35.002-08:002010-01-12T07:53:35.002-08:00Great interview, Dennis. As much as I love "Re-Animator", I'm equally as fond of "From Beyond."

I love the idea of odd double feature pairings. My home town theater, the Dolton, in Dolton, IL, ran double features that I would go see as a kid throughout the 1970s, and they often continued the trend well into the 1980s. Management wasn't concerned if the titles compelmented each other, they would just book whatever they could get at the time. My favorite pairing was "Agnes of God" and "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins."Kevin Deanyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07697597405552599370noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-90976867247612740372010-01-12T02:02:53.658-08:002010-01-12T02:02:53.658-08:00The man sure does love his fisticuffs, that's ...The man sure does love his fisticuffs, that's for sure.
