Roughly 34 years or so ago my extremely pregnant mother went into labor with me in a movie theater, during the big car-chase sequence of FREEBIE AND THE BEAN.

The long-running family joke became that I had arrived three weeks ahead of schedule, just because I wanted to see how the movie ended.

Two years ago, when FREEBIE screened as part of a Kovacs tribute at Cambridge's invauluable Brattle Theatre, a couple of friends were begging me not to attend, crying: "Everything's gonna come full circle and you'll die in there!"

Obviously I survived, and I still think the movie is hilarious. I first saw it at an outdoor showing in College Station, Texas, free for students and their families.

I never thought that the way the tranny was treated was anything terrible, or any more terrible than you'd find in any other film of the time. Though it's been awhile, I remember it going like this: When a co-worker raises his eyebrows after seeing him on the stretcher, Caan says "fag," but not with any particular venom. As you say, he's an obstacle to get around, and there's no more apparent hatred in it than there would be if the guy was a baker or a subway attendant.Rick Olsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04846018585978997261noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-56954704456082592092009-10-13T11:04:40.939-07:002009-10-13T11:04:40.939-07:00Thanks for this. I don't necessarily disagree with anything you said -- I mean, you're right on -- but I have to say I was kind of underwhelmed when it screened earlier this year in New York. The car chases are indeed spectacular and hilarious, but a lot of the scenes increasingly muffle Caan and Arkin in favor of uncontrolled anarchy. In which respect your comparison w/"Bad Boys II" (at least the half-hour I've seen) is actually super acute; amusement becomes exhaustion.Vadimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16748591562916338637noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-35288533697818736492009-10-13T10:42:35.511-07:002009-10-13T10:42:35.511-07:00It's just a shame that Warners couldn't ha...It's just a shame that Warners couldn't have ported a Richard Rush commentary for the DVD. And the local theater owner in my hometown subscribed to the NYT and would toss me the old Arts & Leisure section occasionally, so I'd see some of his stuff there too. I don't remember ever being too inspired by what he wrote, and he did have a bit of a reactionary streak, but was in no way in Crowther's league there. Before I really knew who Sarris was, though, I always thought of Canby and Kael as the two giants, probably because he got blurbed in the ads more than anyone else I noticed at the time.Dennis Cozzaliohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954848938471883431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-37768175193525758762009-10-13T10:07:25.187-07:002009-10-13T10:07:25.187-07:00Vincent Canby.
