It scared the hell out of me, and I remember wondering at the time why all horror movies didn't have a scene of the monster/creature/bad guy hurtling at the camera like that! And that element of Yorga taking place in the obviously sun-baked of locales was funny to me even as a kid.

But now, A Cold Night's Death... I really am waiting for some evening very soon when I can load up that YouTube post in my darkened living room and conjure that feeling of staying up till 2:00 a.m. watching some terrifying haunt on the CBS Late Movie and being sure, absolutely sure, that there was something lurking over in the corner, behind the recliner, just waiting for me to make a move...Dennis Cozzaliohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954848938471883431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-12955668816105676212009-07-30T21:43:04.186-07:002009-07-30T21:43:04.186-07:00Ah... Culp has been in soooo many great TV movies and episodes (with Demon With a Glass Hand being my all-time fav). I'll be taking this in, soon.

One of the most chilling aspects of Count Yorga movies that I recall from long ago was the unexpected use of slow motion in the vampire attack sequences. Plus, doing it in well lit surroundings. I don't remember any other vampire flick doing that way. Great stuff.

Another wonderful post, Dennis. Well, I'm only half teasing... but I did see Rogue a few months ago and it really ticked me off that this film didn't have a wider appeal. As you rightly point out, the cinematography is absolutely stunning, If McLean decides to stop making fiction films he'd have a great career as a nature documentary filmmaker.

And yes, I like how he takes the time to let us get to know the various characters so that we empathize with their plight once the croc starts attacking them. I've always been a fan of Radha Mitchell (she was excellent in PITCH BLACK) and I think that this is my favorite role of hers to date.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164105442273577128noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-33563997067988875982009-07-30T05:47:29.742-07:002009-07-30T05:47:29.742-07:00An excellent review of Orphan, Dennis. I enjoyed ...An excellent review of Orphan, Dennis. I enjoyed your discussion of the acting in the film. Sarsgaard's role reminds me of his work in Boys Don't Cry, since he plays something of a dupe in both films. Your mention of Fuhrmann's face growing "sallow and sunken" reminds me of the way Hitchcock progressively lit (or one could say darkened) Anthony Perkins' face in Psycho. Also, whereas Hitchcock would use a house and a hotel to suggest the differences between America and decadent Europe in films like Psycho and Notorious, Collet-Sera contrasts the family's postmodern house with Esther's clothes to accentuate her old-fashioned Russian menace.

Overall, I found Orphan to be one of the best films of the summer thus far.The Film Doctor https://www.blogger.com/profile/03073505923746994988noreply@blogger.com
