As always, it's wonderful to watch (or read) you dive into the corners and crevices of a film, Dennis!Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13600990166210022027noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-24037444620981934662010-05-07T23:53:17.628-07:002010-05-07T23:53:17.628-07:00A long vanished memory reclaimed. I check the Facebook page so infrequently that it's hard for me to reply to things posted on my wall, but I'm usually pretty quick to reply if somebody sends me a message via Facebook. I just may be the only 28 year-old who is still slow on the uptake with this whole social networking thing, hehe.Kevin J. I should probably revisit it myself, especially since I hold Raw Meat in such high regard.

Seems I owe you a e-mail too... See you on Facebook soon?

Snarky: The Peter Hyams comparison might be apt, but for the fact that Hyams has been far more prolific than Sherman in his career. I can't speak about Poltergeist III, but Vice Squad, though unpleasant, had a raw energy to it that was surprising. I'm not sure I think of it as a good movie, but it's certainly watchable. And as I told Kevin, I suppose it's time for me to see Dead and Buried again. Many thanks for your enthusiastic support too. (Speaking of Hyams, there's not much to grab ahold of there after Capricorn One-- it seems from IMDb that hes readying a remakle of Outland, for some reason-- but I do remember The Relic fondly.)

Nate: I'll look for that shot. You're right, though. Lee's appearance has a very odd quality to it, and it makes sense that this feeling was intentionally created.

Mr. Peel: See you Saturday night!Dennis Cozzaliohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954848938471883431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-70233914953780544392010-05-07T10:59:39.114-07:002010-05-07T10:59:39.114-07:00Huh...I've always heard good things about Dead...Huh...I've always heard good things about Dead and Buried (written by Dan O Bannon of Alien fame, right???) and have it in the queue based on the good word of mouth and the fact that it's one of the few zombie flicks I haven't seen. I remember being excited by the prospect of watching it because of Sherman's name being attached to it. Hmmm...we'll have to see, I suppose.

Anywho...great review for one of my favorite British horror flicks from the 70's.Kevin J. There he is, dead-center on the screen, the camera taking in all of his lanky frame from head to toe. It's been a while since I've seen the film, but I think the camera might be slowly pushing in on him.

It's very unusually framed and intensely disquieting. In that, it's effective, as Lee's government agent is supposed to be slightly unnerving.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954838068836802591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-89920141650107486672010-05-07T08:24:37.743-07:002010-05-07T08:24:37.743-07:00"Its director, Gary Sherman, would go on to m..."Its director, Gary Sherman, would go on to make the disappointing Dead and Buried (1981), the vicious exploitation hit Vice Squad (1982), which introduced many of us to the singular charms of Wings Hauser, and the wholly unnecessary Poltergeist III (1988), none of which would lead any reasonable person to conclude that an early Sherman film, one in which the talents that led to those later mediocrities would presumably be even more crudely hewn, would be worth anything more than a cursory look."

I don't mean to judge, but based on what you've written here my Peter Hyams alarm is blaring. Am I off base with the comparison. Not in terms of subject matter, but the uneven application of their talents in an increasing array of disappointing works.

If so, Gary Sherman sounds like someone I should check out. I definitely enjoy seeing folks with talent being incompetent than generally unremarkable filmmakers hold it together with a producer pulling their puppet strings.

As always, EXCELLENT entry. I love reading this blog so much. It's read an entry then hunt down the works mentioned.

It makes me so excited to read you each day!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
