Nevertheless, I have enjoyed this recent diversion into baseball because there seems to be few cinephiles who have anything other than contempt for professional sports. I am fanatical about movies and baseball, and while there's no shortage of writing about either, it's fun when they converge and provide a perspective missed by those whose focus rarely strays beyond one subject. Anyway, congrats on a successful, exiting year and I hope next year brings more baseball action worthy of discussion. Until then, we're entering the prime season for new films and your take on that is much anticipated. (Also, don't write off the dreaded Sawx yet - they're tough to put away. Game 5 was amazing, even though I'm pulling hard for the ratings nightmare from St. Pete)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-41105270246744517842008-10-16T16:01:00.000-07:002008-10-16T16:01:00.000-07:00Hey Dennis, Loved this blog. Even though I have National League loyalty, I will find it hard to root for those damned (good) Phillies, at least right now, so soon after that behind-the-shed whuppin' the Dodgers endured last night. There's something about the Rays' incredible turnaround, and the fact that they are so talented, that makes me gravitate toward them.

Plus they are making it awfully hard on those homers at ESPN, so that's always good!Dennis Cozzaliohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954848938471883431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-81343913715893929782008-10-16T15:21:00.000-07:002008-10-16T15:21:00.000-07:00Yeah, there is certainly reason to feel like this ...Yeah, there is certainly reason to feel like this is the start of something good, not the end of something good.

Matthew, the Ben Folds song came up on my wife's iPod just as I was prepping the post and I thought it couldn't have been more perfect-- certainly less cathartic than a quote from Folds' "One Angry Dwarf" ("Kiss my ass good-bye!") but more fitting to how I was feeling last night.

And a fellow Dodger fan passed along this chilling bit of information today: had the game lasted exactly two minutes longer-- if it had ended at 9:37 p.m. instead of 9:35 p.m.-- the Dodgers would have ceded the pennant to the Phillies at the precise minute 20 years ago last night that Gibson hit that fateful home run.

Happy anniversary!Dennis Cozzaliohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954848938471883431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-68922613378603551212008-10-16T11:20:00.000-07:002008-10-16T11:20:00.000-07:00My condolences, Dennis. This is how Yankee fans have felt every year since 2001, that feeling of being so close and yet so far, of snatching only defeat from the hands of victory. But you have a solid team there now and a great manager who can take you to where you want to be, providing you want it bad enough. I'm sure they will.

If it's any consolation, Red Sox fans will soon be feeling the way you do. It's certainly a consolation to me, because boy, oh boy, do I hate the Red Sox.

And nice choice of an intro there. That's easily Folds' best song, and it's a fitting way to start your piece.Headquarters 10https://www.blogger.com/profile/17099693396976890051noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-61256197549923790792008-10-16T06:48:00.000-07:002008-10-16T06:48:00.000-07:00Sorry about that error filled exit for the Dodgers...Sorry about that error filled exit for the Dodgers. The Sox are looking worse, or is it the Rays are looking better than the Phillies? I can't decide. I just know this: I'm old-school when it comes to baseball so I always want teams like the Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Giants, Cardinals, Tigers, Cub, etc in the World Series. Teams like the Diamondbacks, Rockies, Marlins and (gag, gasp, cough) Devil Rays(!) sound like teams that should be a second tier Jai-Alai line-up. In other words -

GO PHILLIES!!!! Do not let those Devil Rays take the series. For god sakes, don't let that happen.Greghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05730146625671701859noreply@blogger.com
