Chris, I am going to order the Bettie Bao Lord book today. It sounds pretty wonderful. As a collector of books aimed at introducing children to film history, do you have any others you'd recommend? I happened to order SHINING STAR too, partly as an illustrator who just wanted those paintings, partly as someone who accumulates books aimed at introducing children to film history, but mostly as a movie nerd with a crush on Wong. Between this review and that picture of Wong eyeing Lon Chaney with disconcertment, I'm double-excited.

For those particularly concerned with the matter of inspiring young Asian-American girl cubs (of probably 8-10-year-old reading level) -- or, oh, say, any grown-ups interested in the historical Dodgers -- do investigate Bette Bao Lord's very funny classic IN THE YEAR OF THE BOAR AND JACKIE ROBINSON.

Paula, it is my pleasure. I'm looking forward to reading it to my daughters (and having it read to me!). It was really nice to read a book for young readers that really took their sophistication as a matter of course. And you did an exceptional job distilling a complicated life down for your audience without making Wong's journey feel sketchy, while leaving plenty of room for enthusiastic readers to take their investigation further. Thank you for a book very well done.

If you have the chance, see Alexi Tan's movie Blood Brothers. Anna May Wong is the real life character in this fictional story, making an appearance in Hong Kong. The reverence accorded to her anticipates another American actor who was better appreciated in Hong Kong - Bruce Lee.
