Still, not quite as disturbing as a single viewing of "Straw Dogs," but the double bill was just more intense for a longer time than the single feature. Later movies never had that effect.Ronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00452222696907771602noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8795280.post-86249816876728795862016-03-12T12:39:45.954-08:002016-03-12T12:39:45.954-08:00I don't think there's ever been a better p...I don't think there's ever been a better pairing than King Kong and Beauty and the Beast (1946). It was at the Nuart as I recall, though I didn't actually attend. It might have even been at the elder Torgan's New Beverly. As to ones I actually attended it would be hard to beat The Wizard of Oz and Singin' in the Rain at the Vagabond, where you got the ticket taker's impression of Jean Hagen. Don't remember the ticket taker's name, but she was well known. I'm not sure, but I think this was the first time I'd seen either on a big screen.

I've probably actually seen better double features at tribute series, but I don't think that counts. The Silent Clowns series, also at the Vagabond, is one of the first things I'd return to if I had a time machine. My favorite all-time museum series was The Enchanted Drawing, LA County Museum of Art's series on Hollywood animated cartoons. I've still got the programs for that.

Double features are all well and good, but you know, I don't think I ever had more true revelations than at Gary Essert's thematic 72-hour movie marathons at the LA Filmex film festivals. First place I ever saw a Preston Sturges movie was at the comedy marathon.Robert Fiorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06357467040644448167noreply@blogger.com
